Chapter 8 - The Shadow Matrix

"Oakridge?" I repeated, my mind racing. "That house has been vacant for four years! It's locked in a probate trust!"
"Apparently, someone has been paying the utility bills and maintaining an active fiber-optic internet connection from inside the basement," Claire revealed, pulling up a satellite map of the heavily wooded estate.
I stared at the map. The Oakridge house was a sprawling, gothic property my father had built in the late nineties. It was where I had grown up, surrounded by server racks, copper-shielded rooms, and my father's obsessive focus on personal security.
"Mary knew about the house," I realized suddenly, memories flashing through my mind. "When my father was sick during his final months, Mary was hired as his primary residential administrator. She managed his household books before I ever met Beckett."
Claire's eyes widened. "Wait. Are you telling me Mary met your husband after she worked for your father?"
"No," I whispered, the sickening realization clicking into place like pieces of a dark puzzle. "Mary introduced me to Beckett six months after my father died. She presented him as a quiet, unassuming financial consultant. I thought it was a chance encounter at a charity gala."
"It was a setup," Claire said, her tone grim. "From the very beginning. They didn't just target you for your money, Sarah. They were placed in your life to execute a long-term corporate takeover."
A knock on the door interrupted us. Officer Thompson walked into the room, holding a thick manila folder under his arm.
"Ms. Vance," Thompson said, nodding respectfully to me. "Beckett is currently being held on two million dollars bail for attempted murder and assault. But while we were processing Mary’s personal belongings at the precinct, we found something you need to see."
Thompson opened the folder and dropped three printed photos onto my tray table.
They were photographs of an old, leather-bound journal. Inside, written in my father's unmistakable handwriting, were detailed notes regarding a secret protocol named Project Lazarus.

And right beneath my father's signature was a list of co-signers.
The first name belonged to Mary. The second belonged to a man I thought was my closest ally on the Vanguard board of directors.
