Chapter 5 - Metallic Clicks

|

The recording continued to play, every horrifying second amplified through the quiet medical bay.

The sound of gasping echoed from the speaker, followed by the terrifying noise of leather gloves tightening around flesh.

Then came Mary’s voice, cold, detached, and whispering right beside the microphone: “Not the face this time, Beckett. We can’t have visible marks if we’re dropping her at the clinic.”

The heavy thud of my body hitting the dining room floor reverberated through the speaker, followed by the sound of my desperate, wheezing struggle for oxygen.

Dr. Scott turned her head slowly, her eyes burning with pure disgust as she stared at Beckett.

Mary’s face drained of every drop of color. She opened her mouth, her voice cracking into a desperate screech. "She staged it! She edited that audio! You can generate fake voices with artificial intelligence now! Everyone knows that!"

Claire Morgan didn't even look up from her laptop screen.

"The audio file carries a cryptographic hash generated in real-time by a local hardware timestamp," Claire said calmly to Officer Thompson. "It is legally impossible to alter or forge. Furthermore, the metadata on Beckett’s personal computer shows that three hours ago, he drafted a fraudulent voluntary admission form for a psychiatric facility."

Officer Thompson turned to face Beckett. The young officer's posture was rigid, his expression hardened into stone.

"Turn around, sir," Thompson ordered, unholstering his handcuffs. "Put your hands behind your back."

"You're making a mistake!" Beckett yelled, flinching as the heavy steel cuffs snapped around his wrists with a pair of sharp, metallic clicks. "I'm the victim here! She attacked me first!"

"Save it for your arraignment," Thompson growled, shoving Beckett toward the exit.

Mary stood frozen in the center of the hallway, watching her son being marched away in shame. But as the police officers pushed Beckett through the glass doors, Mary suddenly turned her head toward my trauma bay.

A dark, terrifying smile spread slowly across her face.

"You think this ends with him, Sarah?" Mary whispered, stepping closer to my bed.
