An hour later, Claire and I stood inside the private vault of First National Bank, accompanied by two armed detectives and the bank manager.
The manager turned the master key, unlocked safe deposit box 412, and pulled out a heavy metal box.
Inside sat a single, silver hard drive, etched with my father's initials: R.V.
Claire connected the drive to her secure laptop, entering the decryption key Beckett had provided during his formal police confession.
The drive unlocked instantly, revealing hundreds of audio logs recorded by my father during the final six months of his life.
I clicked on the final audio file, dated three days before his death.
My father's voice filled the quiet vault—weak, labored, but unmistakably clear:
“If you are listening to this, Sarah, it means Arthur and Mary have made their move. I knew I couldn't stop them while I was dying, so I let them believe they were successfully plotting against you. I gave them enough rope to hang themselves.”
Tears welled up in my eyes as I listened to my father's voice for the first time in four years.
“Everything they did—the forged signatures, the hidden servers, the corporate proxies—has been recorded on an immutable ledger stored with my personal attorney, Marcus Sterling.”
