Chapter 17 - Unmasking the Syndicate

We rushed from the bank straight to Vanguard Systems corporate headquarters in downtown Chicago.
The glass skyscraper was surrounded by news vans, reporters, and corporate security officers. The news of Arthur Vance's arrest and the attempted corporate raid had broken globally, sending Vanguard's stock into a temporary halt.
Claire and I stepped off the private executive elevator on the top floor.
Marcus Sterling was standing in the glass boardroom, surrounded by six federal agents from the Securities and Exchange Commission and two state prosecutors.
When Marcus saw me walk through the door, wearing a sharp black suit with my head held high, a look of profound relief washed over his face.
"Sarah," Marcus said, stepping forward with his hands extended. "Thank you God you're safe."
"You knew," I said, stopping in front of him. "My father told you everything before he died."
"Your father knew Arthur was alive," Marcus revealed quietly, motioning for the agents to give us privacy. "Richard discovered that Arthur was funneling money out of Vanguard's defense accounts six years ago. But Richard was too ill to fight him in court. He knew that if he confronted Arthur directly, Arthur would vanish into the shadows again."
"So he used me as bait?" I asked, a bitter edge in my voice.
"No, Sarah," Marcus said firmly, looking me in the eye. "He spent his final months building a legal and technical fortress around you. He knew Mary would try to use Beckett to manipulate you. He made sure every move they executed was tracked, logged, and hardcoded into an automated trap that would permanently destroy Arthur's legal standing."

Marcus pulled a leather-bound document from his desk and laid it before me.
"This is the master trust agreement," Marcus said. "It officially dissolves the Vance Estate Trust and consolidates one hundred percent of Vanguard's voting shares directly into your personal portfolio. You are no longer just the CEO, Sarah. You own this company outright."
