Chapter 8 - The Question Laid Bare

|

Russell’s breath hitched in his chest as he tried to say the name again, his fingers clawing weakly at the thin bedsheet.

"Val... erie... is... she..."

Leona stepped closer to the edge of the bed. She leaned down slightly, her face only inches from his, so close he could see the absolute clarity in her dark eyes.

She did not yell. She did not cry. She asked the single question she had buried deep in her heart for six long years—the question he had spent thousands of days avoiding while eating her food and sleeping under her roof.

"Was she worth six years of your life, Russell?"

The words hung in the sterile air of the ICU, heavy, sharp, and inescapable.

Russell froze. The struggling sounds in his throat stopped dead. The panic in his right eye transformed into pure, overwhelming shock.

He looked at Leona, realization washing over him like ice water.

He had spent six years believing he was clever. He had believed he was a master of secrets, keeping two women in separate compartments while maintaining his comfortable home life. He had thought Leona was blind, complacent, or too weak to notice the missing hours and late-night texts.

He had never realized that she had known every single day.

"L... Leona..." a tear welled in his right eye, spilling over his cheek and pooling in the hollow of his ear. "I... I..."

"You thought I didn't know," Leona whispered, her voice a razor dipped in velvet. "You thought I stayed because I needed you. I stayed for Molly. And now she is twenty."

May you like

Russell tried to shake his head, his right hand reaching out to grab her wrist, begging for mercy without words.

"You are going to recover, Russell," Leona said, leaning back up and looking down at him. "Because I saved your life. But your secret life is over."
