Chapter 7 - The Room of Beeping Monitors

|
Morning light broke through the high ICU windows, turning the gray sky into a faint, pale blue. The storm had finally passed, leaving wet streaks on the glass.
Molly had fallen asleep on the small cot near the corner of the room, exhausted from her late-night drive and hours of silent crying.
Leona stood beside the hospital bed, holding a warm plastic cup of black coffee she had bought from the cafeteria machine downstairs.
A soft rustle came from the bed.
Russell moved his head slowly against the pillow. His right eye opened first, unfocused and bloodshot, followed by his left. He blinked several times against the harsh artificial light of the room.
His gaze wandered past the IV pole, past the heart monitor, and finally landed on Leona.
Panic flickered in his eyes. He tried to sit up, but his left side refused to obey his brain's commands. A soft, choked groan escaped his throat.
"Don't move," Leona said, her voice calm and devoid of anger. "You are in the ICU. You had a severe stroke."
Russell’s right hand twitched against the bedsheet. His mouth opened, his tongue thick and clumsy behind his teeth.
"L... Le... ona..." he managed to slur, the left corner of his mouth drooping heavily as he fought to form the consonants.
Leona took a slow sip of her coffee and set the cup down on the bedside table. She crossed her arms, looking down at the man she had been married to for twenty-three years—the man who had spent the last six living two separate lives.
Russell looked up at her, his right eye filled with a mix of fear, helplessness, and an urgent desire to explain something.

"Val..." Russell rasped out, his breath heavy. "Val... erie..."
Leona felt a sharp, cold spark ignite deep within her chest, burning away the last lingering thread of pity she had carried through the night.
