Chapter 13 - Power of Attorney

|

Russell sat frozen in his hospital bed, staring at the closed door where his daughter had vanished. The monitor beside him began to beep rapidly as his heart rate spiked from panic and shame.

A nurse hurried into the room, checking the telemetry screen.

"Mr. Mercer, you need to calm down," the nurse warned, adjusting the IV line. "Elevating your blood pressure right now is extremely dangerous."

Leona stepped forward, placing a cool hand on the edge of the bed frame.

"Deep breaths, Russell," she said, her voice devoid of heat or malice, operating with pure efficiency. "You need to stay alive if you want to fix any of this."

Russell looked at her, his right eye wide and desperate, his slurred speech trying to force out apologies he had withheld for six years.

"S... so... rry..." he choked out. "Le... ona..."

"Save your energy," she said simply.

A knock sounded at the door, and Dr. Vance walked in holding a clipboard alongside a hospital social worker.

"Mrs. Mercer," Dr. Vance said, glancing at the chart. "We need to discuss your husband's post-acute care plan. Because of the stroke's severity, he will require several weeks of inpatient physical and speech rehabilitation once he is discharged from the ICU."

"Understood," Leona said.

"As his legal spouse, you hold primary power of attorney for all medical and placement decisions," the social worker added, handing Leona a set of authorization forms. "We need you to sign off on the designated rehabilitation facility."

Russell watched Leona take the pen. He knew Valerie had wanted him moved to a private private clinic downtown—a clinic Valerie owned shares in.

He looked at Leona, completely at her mercy.

Leona signed her name smoothly on the bottom line of the official county medical network form.

"He will go to the St. Jude State Rehabilitation Center," Leona told the social worker. "It is thorough, secure, and has very strict visiting hours."
