Chapter 4 - The Shadow in the Waiting Room

|

The Emergency Room waiting area at St. Jude’s smelled of cheap floor cleaner, stale coffee, and industrial disinfectant. Leona sat on a hard vinyl chair in the corner, her canvas tote resting against her ankles, watching the doors slide open every time an ambulance pulled into the bay.

At 8:45 p.m., a doctor with tired eyes and a blue surgical cap walked through the double doors.

"Family of Russell Mercer?" he called out.

Leona stood up immediately, smoothing her coat. "I'm his wife."

The doctor gestured for her to follow him into a quiet consultation room off the main hallway.

"I'm Dr. Vance," he said, closing the door behind them. "Your husband suffered an ischemic stroke. A blood clot blocked a major artery in his brain. We administered a clot-busting medication within the critical window because you called emergency services so quickly."

Leona nodded slowly. "What is his condition now?"

"He is stable, but he has significant weakness on his left side, and his speech is severely impaired," Dr. Vance explained, reviewing the digital chart on his tablet. "The next forty-eight hours are crucial. We are moving him to the Intensive Care Unit."

Before Leona could ask about the rehabilitation timeline, heavy footsteps echoed outside in the hallway. The door to the consultation room was pushed open without a knock.

A woman stood in the doorway, drenched from the rain, her mascara slightly smudged beneath her wide, frantic eyes. She wore a high-end beige trench coat and carried a designer leather handbag.

It was Valerie.

Leona didn't move. She turned her head slowly, looking at the woman who had spent six years taking pieces of her husband.

Valerie ignored the doctor entirely, her eyes locking onto Leona with desperate aggression.

"Where is he?" Valerie demanded, her voice trembling with adrenaline. "What room is Russell in?"
