Chapter 6 - Molly’s Shadow

|
By 2:00 a.m., the ICU was quiet except for the steady rhythmic beep of heart monitors and the soft hum of ventilator tubes down the hall.
Leona sat on a hard vinyl armchair beside Russell’s bed. He was fast asleep, his face pale and sunken against the white pillows. An IV line ran into his right arm, and sensors were attached to his chest. On his left side, his arm lay limp, resting on a folded towel.
The heavy door pushed open gently, and Molly stepped into the room.
She was wearing an oversized college sweatshirt, her hair pulled back into a messy ponytail, her eyes red and swollen from crying all the way down Highway 12 from Madison.
"Mom," Molly whispered, her voice breaking as she saw her father lying under the thin hospital blankets.
Leona stood up immediately and wrapped her arms around her daughter. Molly clung to her mother, sobbing silently against Leona's shoulder.
"He looks so small," Molly wept, staring at Russell's altered face. "Is he going to be okay?"
"The doctors stopped the clot," Leona murmured, stroking Molly's hair gently. "He is alive, Molly. That is what matters right now."
Molly pulled back, wiping her eyes with the sleeve of her sweater. She walked over to the bed and carefully touched Russell's right hand.
"Dad?" she whispered softly. "Can you hear me?"
Russell’s eyelids fluttered, but he did not wake up.
Molly sat down on the small footstool near the bed, holding her father's hand tightly. She looked up at Leona with wide, confused eyes.
"Mom, when I was walking through the main lobby downstairs, I saw a woman sitting near the entrance," Molly said, her brow furrowing. "She was crying, staring at her phone. She looked at me like she knew who I was. It was really strange."

Leona looked down at her daughter, feeling a cold knot form in her chest.
"Don't worry about people in the lobby, sweetheart," Leona said quietly. "Focus on your father."
