Chapter 15 - The Safe in the Closet

|

That evening, while Russell slept heavily from the exhaustion of his physical therapy exercises, Leona walked into his office.

She carried a small metal crowbar she had taken from the garage.

She pulled back the rug behind his desk, revealing a small wall safe embedded in the baseboard—a safe Russell had installed four years ago under the excuse of "storing firearms safely."

Leona didn't know the combination, but she had spent the afternoon reading through his old tax records and emails she had recovered from his laptop.

She typed in the six-digit code corresponding to the date he and Valerie had registered their LLC: 0-4-1-2-2-1.

The green light blinked twice. The electronic lock clicked open.

Leona pulled open the heavy steel door.

Inside were three items: a velvet box containing a diamond ring that had never been given to anyone, a second passport in Russell's name, and a signed land contract for a lake house in upper Michigan—titled jointly under Russell Mercer and Valerie Vance.

Leona felt a cold smile touch her lips as she reviewed the land contract.

He hadn't just used their savings. He had taken out a second mortgage on his commercial life insurance policy to purchase a thirty-acre lakefront estate behind her back.

She took out her phone and snapped clear high-resolution photographs of every single page.

Then, she pulled out a manila envelope from her tote bag, slid the original documents inside, and locked the safe back up.

He had built a hidden kingdom for his mistress.

And Leona was about to use it to strip him of everything he owned.
