Chapter 5 - The Truth of the Deed

|

A suffocating silence descended over the fourth-floor hallway.

Julian’s eyes scanned the first page of the legal packet. His fingers began to shake so violently that the paper rattled in his grip.

It was the original property deed, the land registry filing, and the tax settlement records for Apartment 4B. Every single line of ownership carried one undeniable, legally binding name: ARA VANCE (NEÉ MERCER).

"This... this is a mistake," Julian stammered, his voice dropping into a desperate register. "I pay the mortgage! We’ve lived here for five years! I'm the head of this household!"

"You transfer money to Ara's personal account, which she uses to pay the building fees," Mrs. Higgins corrected smoothly, tapping a finger against her clipboard. "But the property was purchased outright six years ago—eight months before you and Ara were ever married. She paid a seventy-percent cash down payment using her private inheritance, and the title is held exclusively in her name. You are legally classified as an unleased occupant."

Carol snatched the document from her son’s hands, her eyes darting across the notary seals and state stamps. The arrogant mask she had worn for years crumbled into sheer disbelief.

"You lied to us," Carol whispered, turning to look at Julian with wide, horrified eyes. "You told me you bought this penthouse to show my friends how successful you were!"

Before Julian could answer, a crisp chime echoed from Mrs. Higgins' tablet. She tapped the screen and pressed the speaker button.

Ara’s voice filled the hallway, clear, calm, and resonant, bouncing off the stacked cardboard boxes.

"No, Carol," Ara said through the speaker. "He didn't lie to you. You simply believed the story you wanted to believe. You wanted a helpless, dependent daughter-in-law who stayed silent while you took over her life."

Julian lunged toward the tablet, his face contorted in desperation. "Ara! Ara, pick up the phone! Stop this madness right now! We can fix this! You're my wife!"

A cold, heavy pause hung in the air before Ara answered.

"Your wife?" Ara asked softly. "The woman you struck in the face? The woman you left bleeding on the shoe cabinet floor while your mother told her she deserved it?"

For the first time in his life, Julian Vance had absolutely nothing to say.
