Chapter 12 - The Paper Trail

|
Two uniformed police officers and my legal counsel, Sarah Vance (no relation to Julian), stepped out of the freight elevator.
Sarah took one look at Julian standing over me in the restricted hallway and pointed her finger sharply. "Officers, that is the man named in the emergency restraining order served four hours ago!"
Julian froze, his eyes darting from the officers' drawn tasers to the crowbar in my hands.
"Hands where we can see them! On the ground! Now!" the lead officer barked, pulling his taser and aiming the red laser dot directly at Julian’s chest.
Julian raised his hands slowly, a sinister smirk spreading across his face as he dropped to his knees. "This isn't over, Ara," he whispered as the officer forced his arms behind his back and clicked the cuffs into place. "You don't have the master encryption key. Without it, those files are useless in court."
As the officers marched Julian toward the elevator, Sarah walked over to me, wrapping a warm wool coat over my shoulders.
"Are you alright, Ara?" Sarah asked urgently.
"I'm fine," I said, pulling the rusted iron key stamped 714 out of my pocket. "He thinks I don't have the encryption key. But my father left me something else."

Sarah looked at the key. "What is that?"
"That's a key to a safety deposit box at the old Manhattan Central Vault," I said, my eyes locking onto the elevator doors closing behind Julian. "And we're going there right now."
