Chapter 9 - The Investor Trap

|
Two weeks later, Ethan was released on a modified personal recognizance bond while his defense attorneys desperately negotiated with the district attorney's office.
Instead of keeping a low profile like any sane person facing felony charges, Ethan made a move of pure desperation.
My former college roommate, Maya, who was now a senior associate at one of the city's top venture capital firms, called me during her lunch break.
"Lena, you will not believe who just submitted a pitch deck to our managing partners," Maya said, her voice dripping with disbelief.
"Ethan?" I guessed instantly.
"Not just Ethan," Maya clarified. "He’s pitching an 'advanced AI-driven medical logistics software' called Aegis Health. And guess whose name is listed as his Chief Technology Advisor and Primary Investor on slide three?"
My jaw tightened. "Mine."
"He included your professional bio, your former corporate healthcare contacts, and listed your private family trust as his primary financial guarantor for two million dollars in seed capital," Maya explained. "He’s hosting a live presentation for our investment panel at the Grand Regency Hotel downtown tomorrow morning at ten."
I sat at my desk, rubbing my temples. He was so deeply drowning in debt and legal fees that he was actively attempting a multi-million-dollar securities fraud using my reputation to secure immediate cash to pay off his lenders.
"Maya," I said, a dangerous calm coming over me. "Who is presiding over the investment panel tomorrow?"
"Our senior managing partner, Richard Sterling," Maya replied.
"Perfect," I said. "Do me a favor, Maya. Don't reject his pitch deck today. Let him set up his presentation. Let him invite his mother. Let him believe he’s about to close the biggest deal of his life."

"What are you going to do, Lena?" Maya asked, a wicked smile evident in her tone.
"I'm going to guest-star in slide three," I said.
