Chapter 8 - The Ghost of Exes Past

|

On Wednesday evening, I met Adrian at a quiet, upscale bistro on the east side of the city.

Sitting beside him was a woman in her early thirties with sleek blonde hair and a sharp, guarded expression.

"Lena, this is Chloe Bennett," Adrian introduced us. "Chloe was Ethan’s girlfriend five years ago."

My eyebrows raised in surprise. "His ex?"

Chloe offered a tight, sympathetic smile as I took a seat across from her. "Ex-fiancée, actually," Chloe corrected gently. "And like you, Lena, I was four months away from marrying him when I realized my entire life was being systematically dismantled."

I leaned forward, my pulse quickening. "What happened?"

"Ethan started a 'medical software startup' back when we were together," Chloe explained, pulling a stack of old bank statements from her purse. "His mother, Margaret, slowly convinced me to co-sign a small personal line of credit to help him cover his initial payroll. Within a year, they had used my name to open three different credit lines, totaling over one hundred and twenty thousand dollars."

"Did you take them to court?" I asked.

Chloe let out a bitter, humorless laugh. "I tried. But back then, I didn't have a federal prosecutor for a brother. Ethan threatened to ruin my family's business with false smear campaigns, and Margaret threatened to sue me for breach of contract. I was young, terrified, and overwhelmed. I ended up filing for personal bankruptcy just to escape them."

I looked at the documents Chloe laid out on the table. The signatures on her credit applications were identical in style to the forged loan document Detective Hayes had shown me—the exact same trembling flourish on the final letter.

"This is a pattern," I said, a deep rage settling into my bones. "They don't just commit fraud when they run out of money. This is their entire business model. They find women with high credit scores and family wealth, trap them with an engagement, and drain them dry."

"Exactly," Chloe said, looking at me with fierce determination. "I was too weak to destroy them five years ago, Lena. But when your brother reached out to me... I decided I wasn't going to let them do this to another woman and her child."

"Thank you, Chloe," I said, reaching across the table to hold her hand. "Because with your testimony, we aren't just going to sue them. We are going to send them both to prison for a very long time."
