Chapter 13 - The Courthouse Showdown

|

The steps of the County Family Courthouse were buzzing with local reporters and photographers when my towncar pulled up to the curb at eight-thirty the following morning.

Margaret was already standing near the top of the steps, wearing a dramatic black coat and holding a handkerchief, surrounded by three local news cameras.

"I just want to protect my grandbaby!" Margaret was sobbing performatively into a microphone as I stepped out of the vehicle. "My son is a loving father who is being kept away by a deeply disturbed woman!"

Ethan stood behind her, wearing an oversized, wrinkled suit, looking thoroughly defeated but trying his best to look pitiful for the cameras.

I walked up the granite steps calmly, flanked by my brother Adrian and Marcus Vance. I paid no attention to the flashing lights or shouted questions.

Inside Courtroom 302, Judge Beatrice Vance (no relation) presided over the bench with an intimidating, unyielding gaze.

"Mrs. Whitman," Judge Vance began, looking over her spectacles at Margaret’s attorney. "You have requested an emergency court order forcing an expectant mother into mandatory psychological evaluation based on claims of 'instability.' Where is your medical evidence?"

Margaret’s attorney stood up nervously. "Your Honor, my client has provided personal journals and statements detailing Mrs. Vance’s erratic behavior, including her violent attack on Mr. Whitman with a heavy kitchen pan on the night of—"

"Stop right there," Judge Vance interrupted sharply.

She picked up a thick blue folder from her desk—the evidence file submitted by my legal team twenty minutes prior.

"I have reviewed the certified hospital reports from St. Jude’s," Judge Vance declared, her voice echoing through the silent courtroom. "I have reviewed the sworn testimony of ex-fiancée Chloe Bennett. And most importantly, I have viewed the unedited audio and video recording from the night of August twelfth."

Judge Vance glared down at Margaret with absolute disgust.

"Mrs. Whitman, you locked a pregnant woman in your home, physically assaulted her, and attempted to steal her financial assets," Judge Vance stated flatly. "Your petition today is not only frivolous, it is a flagrant abuse of the judicial system designed to harass a victim."

Judge Vance slammed her gavel down with a deafening bang.

"Petition dismissed with prejudice. A permanent, five-hundred-foot restraining order is hereby issued protecting Lena Vance and her child from Ethan and Margaret Whitman. Any attempt to contact them directly or through third parties will result in immediate imprisonment."

Margaret gasped, clutching her chest as if she had been shot.

Ethan slumped into his chair, covering his face with his trembling hands.
