Chapter 2 - The Silent Recording

|

I kept my eyes locked on Margaret as my hand slowly slid into my leather shoulder bag.

Margaret’s mouth curved into a triumphant grin. "Good girl. I knew you'd see reason."

Ethan let out a long breath near the door, his shoulders dropping as if my terror was simply an inconvenience he was glad to have resolved. "See, Lena? That wasn't so hard. We just want what's best for the family."

My fingers didn't find my wallet. They wrapped tightly around my smartphone. Pressing the side button twice by muscle memory, I triggered my emergency shortcut.

My thumb hit the screen, and the call connected instantly.

"Lena?" my brother’s voice filled my ear over the speaker.

I spoke clearly, raising my voice so it reverberated off the foyer walls. "Adrian, I'm at Ethan's mother's house. The front door is deadbolted. Margaret just shoved me into a wall while I'm four months pregnant, and they are holding me here, demanding my ATM card and my PIN."

The air left the room in a sharp gasp.

Ethan's face went completely pale. He lunged forward from the door, his hands outstretched. "Give me that fucking phone!"

I darted to the side, keeping my left arm braced over my stomach. "Touch me again, Ethan, and he hears every single second of it."

My brother’s voice turned instantly into ice—the tone he used when he was standing before a federal judge. "Lena, stay where you are. I have your GPS location. Police units are dispatched and two minutes out. Stay on the line."

Margaret’s face twisted in pure rage. "You dramatic little liar! How dare you call the police on us in my own home!"

I turned the phone display directly toward her face.

A red recording bar was blinking steadily across the top of the screen.

"I didn't just call Adrian," I said, my voice steady despite the trembling in my knees. "My phone has been screen-recording audio and video for the past nine minutes. Your demand for my card, Ethan sliding the deadbolt, the shove against the wall, and your comment about no one wanting a pregnant woman—it’s all uploaded to my cloud server."

Ethan’s jaw dropped open. Panic flooded his eyes. "Lena... baby, please. Let's calm down. We were just stressed about the vendor invoices. You know my mom gets emotional—"

Before he could finish his pathetic plea, the heavy oak front door shook under a barrage of hard, rhythmic knocks.

"Police! Open the door immediately!"

Ethan stared at the deadbolt as if it had suddenly turned into a rattlesnake.
