Chapter 18 - The Birth of Hope

|
At thirty-nine weeks pregnant, on a quiet Sunday morning bathed in warm spring sunlight, I went into labor.
Adrian and Maya rushed me to St. Jude’s Women’s Hospital, where the medical team placed me in a top-tier private suite.
There were no screaming mother-in-laws. No lying fiancés demanding bank cards. No locked doors or terrifying threats.
There was only peace, love, and soft music playing in the background.
After twelve hours of labor, at seven-forty-two in the evening, I gave birth to a healthy, beautiful seven-pound baby girl.
The nurse placed her warm, delicate body onto my chest. I looked down at her tiny face, her dark blue eyes blinking up at me, her tiny fingers curling tightly around my thumb.
"She’s perfect, Lena," Adrian whispered, wiping a tear from his eye as he stood beside my bed.
"Her name is Maya Vance," I declared, my voice choked with overwhelming love and pride. "She carries my family name. And she will never, ever have to fear anyone."

As I held my daughter close, I realized that every ounce of pain, every terrifying second I had endured in that locked foyer, had led me to this single moment of pure, unadulterated triumph.
I had fought for her life before she was even born. And I had won.
