Chapter 14 - The Forensic Audit

|

While the family court slammed the door on Margaret’s fake custody fight, Adrian’s financial crimes task force was systematically dismantling their financial network behind closed doors.

On Friday afternoon, Adrian brought a team of state forensic accountants to my townhouse to present their findings.

"It’s far worse than simple credit card fraud, Lena," Adrian said, laying out a massive digital flow chart on my dining table. "Margaret wasn't just managing Ethan’s money. She running a multi-state real estate wire fraud scheme."

The lead accountant pointed to a series of shell companies registered in Delaware.

"Over the past six years, Margaret Whitman operated a fake investment firm called Whitman Heritage Trust," the accountant explained. "She persuaded elderly widowers and wealthy acquaintances in her social circle to deposit their life savings into 'guaranteed real estate notes.' She then used those funds to pay off Ethan's business debts, buy her designer wardrobe, and lease luxury cars."

"How much did she steal in total?" I asked, astonished.

"Total verified losses so far exceed two point four million dollars," Adrian revealed. "And guess who was listed as the primary corporate secretary on those shell companies?"

"Ethan," I realized instantly.

"Ethan," Adrian nodded. "He wasn't just a passive momma's boy standing by the door while she bullied you. He was an active co-conspirator signing corporate tax returns and laundering stolen money through his software firm's payroll."

"So it’s not just a state domestic case anymore," I said, a wave of relief washing over me.

"No," Adrian smiled grimly. "This is a full federal indictment. The IRS Criminal Investigation Division and the FBI took over the case three hours ago."
