Chapter 5 - Memories of a False Son

|

I closed my eyes for a brief moment, letting the audio feed drone quietly in the background as memories of Victor’s introduction into our family washed over me.

Four years ago, Sophia had brought him to Sunday dinner. He was handsome, impeccably dressed in a custom navy suit, flashing blinding white teeth and speaking with the practiced charm of a Wall Street executive. He called me “Judge Vance” at first, then smoothly transitioned to “Mom” within six months, as if he had earned a place in our lineage through sheer charisma.

He praised my cooking, bought expensive wine, and looked at Sophia like she was the only woman in the universe. But I saw the cracks behind the lacquer. I noticed how his eyes flicked impatiently toward his watch whenever conversation turned to ethics or public accountability. I noticed the way his grip tightened around Sophia’s arm when she disagreed with him about a trivial dinner reservation.

My husband had passed away five years prior, leaving me with a deep intuition for men who wore power like a cheap cologne. I had warned Sophia gently, but she was deeply in love, blinded by the glowing future he painted.

Within two years, Victor had quit his legitimate finance job, claiming he was starting an “import-export venture” that would make them multi-millionaires. Soon, Sophia was isolated from her old friends, her bank accounts were mysteriously drained into joint holdings, and the bright, independent girl I raised was reduced to a nervous shadow walking on eggshells in her own multimillion-dollar estate.

And tonight, that monster had crossed the line. He had laid his hands on my pregnant daughter.

I opened my eyes, the nostalgia evaporating instantly, replaced by a cold, calculating fury. The trap was set. All I needed to do was wait for him to step inside the perimeter.
