Chapter 20 - The Knock at Twilight

|

The sun dipped below the horizon, painting the winter sky in shades of bruised purple and burning gold as evening settled over Cedar Street.

Inside the warm kitchen, Sophia was resting upstairs, and the house was filled with the quiet, peaceful hum of domestic tranquility. I poured myself a fresh cup of tea, walking over to the living room window to watch the neighborhood lights flicker on one by one against the gathering dusk.

Then, it happened.

A sharp, distinct knock echoed against the heavy oak front door.

It wasn't the frantic, desperate pounding of a terrified girl running from a monster. It was a single, heavy, deliberate knock—followed by the faint rustle of an envelope sliding across the hardwood floor right beneath the front entry slot.

I paused, setting my teacup down on the marble counter without a single sound of panic or hesitation.

I walked slowly down the dim hallway, my footsteps measured and calm. When I reached the front door, I didn't open it immediately. I looked down through the glass sidelight.

An unmarked manila envelope lay on the welcome mat, stamped with a crimson classification seal that I hadn't seen in over a decade—a deep-tier federal security mark reserved exclusively for matters concerning national security and elite state corruption.

I bent down, picked up the heavy envelope, and broke the wax seal with my thumb.

Inside was a single sheet of paper, bearing a set of coordinates and a single typed sentence that linked my quiet suburban street directly to a brand new, sprawling web of untouchable power waiting in the shadows.

A slow, knowing smile touched my lips.

I folded the paper neatly, slipped it into my blazer pocket, and walked back toward the kitchen, leaving the front door locked tight against the gathering night, waiting to see who would dare knock next.
