Chapter 15 - The Arraignment Hearing

The federal arraignment hearing was scheduled for a crisp Tuesday morning in the federal district courthouse downtown.
As a senior federal judge, I didn't preside over the case—recusal rules for familial proximity ensured it was assigned to Judge Thomas Sterling, a meticulous and fair jurist known for his zero-tolerance policy on white-collar crime. However, I sat in the front row of the gallery, dressed in a sharp charcoal blazer and pearls, watching the proceedings unfold.
When the bailiff called the court to order, Victor Hale was led into the courtroom in bright orange jumpsuit shackles.
Gone was the custom charcoal suit, the slicked-back hair, and the arrogant smirk. His shoulders were slumped, his face hollowed out by weeks of jailhouse food and panic, and his eyes darted nervously around the packed courtroom. He looked smaller, frail, stripped of the borrowed wealth and corrupt protection that had made him feel invincible.
When Victor caught sight of me sitting in the front row, his steps faltered for a fraction of a second. A flash of pure, unadulterated hatred crossed his features, quickly swallowed down by the crushing weight of his defeat.
Judge Thomas Sterling adjusted his glasses, looking down from the elevated bench with a stern, unimpressed glare.
“Mr. Hale, you stand charged under a forty-count federal indictment ranging from racketeering and extortion to public corruption and financial laundering,” Judge Sterling read from the docket. “How do you plead?”
Victor’s defense attorney stood up hastily, clearing his throat. “Not guilty at this time, Your Honor. We request release on bail pending trial.”

Judge Sterling didn't even blink. He looked down at the prosecution’s voluminous evidence binder, then back at Victor.
“Bail is denied,” Judge Sterling stated firmly, banging his gavel once. “Given the severity of the charges, the overwhelming risk of flight, and documented attempts to intimidate witnesses and tamper with municipal officials, the defendant is remanded to federal custody without bond until trial. Court is adjourned.”
