December arrived with a blanket of crisp, white snow falling silently over the city streets.
The nursery on Cedar Street was fully completed—painted in soft sage, filled with handcrafted wooden toys, and ready for a new life to enter the world. Sophia was healthy, radiant, and preparing for her upcoming baby shower surrounded by loyal friends and family who genuinely cared for her wellbeing.
Victor Hale’s trial date was set for early spring. His defense team had tried every procedural trick in the book to suppress the wiretap evidence, but every single motion had been summarily denied by Judge Sterling. The evidence was bulletproof. The syndicate was dismantled. And the corrupt municipal officials who had once shielded him were now facing their own indictments in federal holding cells.
As for me, I stood once again on my front porch, watching the delicate snowflakes settle softly over the brass knocker where my daughter had pounded in terror just a few months ago.
