Chapter 12 - The Fallout Downtown

By mid-afternoon, the local news stations had broken the story.
Screens across the state flashed with breaking headlines: “MASSIVE FED CRACKDOWN: LOCAL SYNDICATE LEADER VICTOR HALE ARRESTED IN DAWN RAID; MUNICIPAL CORRUPTION EXPOSED.”
Footage played on endless loops of federal agents hauling boxes of seized evidence, cash, and digital servers out of Hale’s corporate headquarters downtown. Chief Miller and three senior detectives from the local precinct had been suspended indefinitely, facing immediate federal indictment for accepting bribes and obstruction of justice.
Sitting in my study with a fresh cup of tea, I watched the broadcast on a muted television screen while reviewing the preliminary asset forfeiture schedules. Every single dollar Victor had stolen, every shell corporation he had built, and every luxury asset he had flaunted was slated for total government seizure.
Sophia sat across from me on the vintage velvet sofa, sipping chamomile tea while going over her phone contacts, blocking mutual acquaintances who had already started texting her with frantic, cowardly excuses about how they “never really knew Victor.”
“It’s amazing how fast rats abandon a sinking ship,” Sophia remarked, a small, genuine smile touching her lips for the first time in months.
“Cowards always flee when the accountability arrives,” I replied, setting my tablet down. “You have nothing to be ashamed of, Sophia. You survived a monster, and you protected your child.”

“Because of you,” she said, her voice thick with emotion as she reached across the table to squeeze my hand. “If I had gone anywhere else last night... if I had listened to him and stayed... I don’t know where I’d be right now.”
“You don't have to wonder about that anymore,” I said firmly, squeezing her hand back. “Your focus right now is your health, your peace, and preparing for your baby. Leave the rest of the battle to the courts. I’ll make sure Victor never sees daylight again.”
