Chapter 11 - The Reality Sets In

|

The chaos in the foyer was controlled, precise, and breathtaking to witness. Federal agents moved through the house with quiet efficiency, securing communications logs and digitally locking down Victor’s assets in real-time.

Victor was shoved gently against the hallway wall by two tactical officers, the heavy steel handcuffs clicking shut around his wrists with a cold, metallic finality. He thrashed weakly against their grip, his eyes locked onto mine with a mixture of terror and utter incomprehension.

“You...” Victor choked out, spittle flying from his lips as he stared at me like I was a ghost. “You did this. You set this up.”

I stepped closer to him, looking down from my height with absolute, icy detachment.

“You threatened my daughter in my city, Victor,” I said softly, ensuring every word cut straight to his marrow. “You forgot a very fundamental rule of life: never underestimate an old woman who spent thirty years mastering the art of destroying criminals legally.”

“You’re a judge...” Victor whispered, the horrifying realization finally crashing down upon his fragile ego like a tidal wave. “The sealed wiretap... that was you. You signed it.”

“And I signed the arrest warrants to go with it,” I replied, turning my back on him with casual dismissal. “Take him away, Director. I don't want the air in my home contaminated any longer.”

As the agents dragged a screaming, flailing Victor out the front door and shoved him into the back of a federal transport van, Sophia watched from the living room archway. She wrapped her arms around her swelling belly, taking a deep, shuddering breath of air that felt lighter and cleaner than any she had breathed in years.

She walked over to me, resting her head gently against my shoulder.

“It’s over, Mom,” she whispered.

“It’s just beginning, sweetheart,” I said, kissing the top of her head. “Your real life starts today.”
