Chapter 8 - The Blueprint Stolen

|

Two weeks later, the ultimate betrayal began to unfold, not in the bedroom, but in the boardroom.

Martin Shaw called Evelyn on a Saturday morning. His usually calm voice was tight with suppressed rage.

“Check your email,” the CFO demanded. “Vanessa just circulated the draft for the Malibu investor presentation. Ethan is presenting it to the capital group next week.”

Evelyn opened the file. The title page read: THE NEXT FORTY YEARS: Ethan Hale - Executive Leadership. Vanessa Cole - Corporate Transformation.

Evelyn scrolled to the third slide. Her breath caught in her throat.

There it was. Project Lantern.

It wasn’t just a summary of the company's financial recovery. It was her exact work. Her freight restructuring models. Her warehouse sale strategy. The supplier payment algorithms she had built from scratch at two in the morning. Whole paragraphs of her operational analysis had been copy-pasted into the document.

But Evelyn’s name was completely erased.

“They’re pitching the turnaround as Ethan’s brainchild,” Martin growled through the phone. “They are using your blood and sweat as his resume to secure twelve million dollars.”

Evelyn kept scrolling, her hands shaking slightly—not from sadness, but from a terrifying, ice-cold fury.

“How did they get the Lantern files?” she asked.

“I checked the server logs. Ethan authorized Vanessa’s team to pull data from the chairman’s archives to build a 'historical narrative',” Martin explained.

Evelyn found an attached email thread between Vanessa and a junior graphic designer.

Designer: Should we include Evelyn Hale in the acknowledgments for the restructuring section? She authored the original files.

Vanessa: Do not clutter the presentation with contributors who have no public executive role. Keep the narrative clean.

Ethan: Agreed. Present the recovery as strictly management-driven.

Evelyn stared at her husband's words. He knew. He knew she had saved the company, and he had actively chosen to bury her to elevate himself and his mistress.

“Evelyn?” Martin asked cautiously over the phone. “What do you want to do?”

“Nothing,” Evelyn said, her voice dropping to a deadly whisper. “Let them print it.”
