Chapter 19 - The Empty Throne

Evelyn stood up. Slowly, deliberately, smoothing the fabric of her midnight-blue dress.
The chaotic room instantly fell silent, waiting for her verdict.
She walked down the length of the massive walnut table. Every eye followed her. She stopped right behind Ethan’s chair. He looked up at her, a pathetic, desperate hope flashing in his eyes. He still believed, deep down, that she would save him. She always had.
Evelyn looked down at him, feeling absolutely nothing.
“I told you once, Ethan, that you confused proximity to power with earning it,” Evelyn said, her voice echoing clearly across the dining room. “You thought because you carried the Hale name, the numbers would magically bend to your will. They don't. The math always tells the truth.”
She turned her gaze to Vanessa, who flinched under the scrutiny.
“And you, Vanessa,” Evelyn continued coolly. “You thought I was a docile housewife because I didn't scream when you stole my husband. I didn't scream because he wasn't worth fighting for. But I will not let you steal my work and use my credibility to defraud these investors.”
Evelyn looked at the board members, who were nodding in silent respect.
“The Malibu project is a financial suicide mission,” Evelyn declared to the room. “The altered numbers prove it. If you fund him, you will lose everything. Project Lantern is complete. My work here is done.”
Arthur reached out, his hand shaking, and grabbed Evelyn’s arm.
“Evie,” the old man pleaded softly, ignoring the crowd. “The COO position is yours. Name your price. Take the wheel.”
Ethan sat frozen, his breath hitching as he realized his father was officially handing his birthright to his wife.
Evelyn looked at Arthur. She felt a profound sadness for the aging patriarch, a man who had built an empire only to watch his own blood try to burn it down.

She gently removed Arthur’s hand from her arm.
“I appreciate the offer, Arthur,” Evelyn said, her voice filled with quiet grace. “But I don't clean up other people's messes anymore. I build my own empires.”
