Before Ethan had become the arrogant monster standing at the table, he had been a man who worshipped his wife’s intellect. Or at least, he had worshipped how her intellect benefited him.
When they first married, Evelyn Mercer was thirty-one and a prodigy at Westbridge Manufacturing. She managed hundreds of union workers, untangled catastrophic supply chain failures, and once stayed awake for forty-eight hours straight to reroute distribution during the California wildfires.
Ethan used to parade her at parties, wrapping his arm around her waist and bragging, “She’s the smartest person in the room. I just got lucky.”
But that was before Arthur’s heart attack. That was before the reality of succession loomed over them.
Ethan was a charismatic salesman. He could walk into a Michelin-starred restaurant, buy the owner a drink, and secure an exclusive wine contract before the appetizers arrived. People loved him. But he despised the actual work of running a business.
Labor laws? Boring. Inventory depreciation? A headache.
“Leadership is about pointing at the mountain,” Ethan would say, waving his hand dismissively at accounting. “You hire the drones to count the rocks on the way up.”
When Arthur collapsed in his office eighteen months ago, Hale Crest Holdings had been bleeding cash for a year. Ethan hadn't noticed. He was too busy looking at the mountain.
Evelyn had taken a one-year leave of absence from Westbridge, officially to care for her ailing father-in-law. Unofficially, Arthur had pulled her aside in his hospital room, clutching her hand with terrifying strength.

“Look at the books, Evie,” Arthur had wheezed through his oxygen mask. “Ethan won’t do it. Look at the contracts. Something is rotting inside my company.”
Evelyn had opened the books. And what she found was a catastrophe waiting to happen. The company was mere months away from a total liquidity crisis, driven entirely by her husband’s negligent signatures. She had stepped into the shadows to fix it, knowing Ethan’s fragile ego couldn't handle the truth.
