Martin clicked the remote again. The projector flashed to the next slide, illuminating the shocked faces of the investors sitting around the table.

Martin stood up, buttoning his suit jacket. His voice was clinical, devoid of emotion, which only made the presentation more devastating.

“Over the last eighteen months, Hale Crest faced a catastrophic liquidity crisis triggered by predatory freight contracts and mismanaged inventory,” Martin informed the room of billionaires. “Project Lantern was a covert restructuring operation initiated by the Chairman. It prevented a default on our primary loans.”

Martin looked directly at Ethan. “The sole architect of this recovery was Evelyn Hale. She operated without a title, without compensation, and under strict confidentiality to protect the company’s public standing.”

The silence in the room was absolute. The dynamic had violently shifted. A minute ago, the guests had been embarrassed for Evelyn, pitying the cast-aside wife. Now, they were staring at Ethan with undisguised contempt.

Vanessa Cole scrambled to control the narrative. Her PR instincts kicked into overdrive. She stood up, forcing a bright, plastic smile.

“Well, this is incredible data,” Vanessa said, her voice shaking slightly. “But these were corporate decisions, authorized by Arthur. No single individual truly owns a corporate recovery. It’s a team effort.”

Arthur turned his terrifying gaze onto Vanessa. “You’re right, Miss Cole. No one owns the success. Which is exactly why I’m not asking who owns it.”

Arthur pointed a trembling finger at his son. “I’m asking who actually performed the work that my son just called useless.”

Vanessa’s smile collapsed. She slowly sank back into her chair.

Ethan turned to Evelyn, his eyes wide with a mixture of betrayal and panic. The illusion of his brilliance had been stripped away in front of the very people he needed to fund his future.

“You were doing all of this behind my back?” Ethan demanded, his voice cracking.

Evelyn didn't raise her voice. She didn't need to.

“I told you I was helping your father, Ethan,” she said calmly.

“You never said you were running a shadow operation!” he hissed.

“You never cared enough to ask what I was doing,” Evelyn replied. “You were too busy looking at the mountain to realize I was carrying you up it.”
