Chapter 14 - The Gala Begins

|

The night of the fortieth-anniversary dinner felt like a royal coronation, meticulously designed by Vanessa Cole’s PR team to elevate Ethan to godhood.

Valets parked fleets of European sports cars outside the Hale Crest estate. Inside, a string quartet played softly as California’s wealthiest families mingled, sipping thousand-dollar bottles of Cabernet.

Evelyn arrived alone. True to her word, she wore a midnight-blue dress that was elegant but understated. She quietly found her assigned seat at the far end of the massive table, miles away from the center of influence.

Martin Shaw caught her eye from across the room and gave a tight, almost imperceptible nod. The digital files were ready. The board members were present. The trap was set.

When Ethan finally made his grand entrance, the room practically parted for him. He was beaming, playing the perfect host. On his arm was Vanessa, wearing an ivory gown that looked aggressively bridal.

Evelyn watched without a trace of emotion as Ethan directed Vanessa to the seat immediately to his right—the seat traditionally reserved for the CEO's spouse. Several older distributors exchanged raised eyebrows, but no one dared speak.

Arthur Hale sat at the absolute head of the table. He looked frail, yet his eyes were sharp as broken glass. He barely acknowledged Ethan, and completely ignored Vanessa.

During the five-course dinner, Ethan dominated the conversation. He spoke loudly and confidently about “the next era of Hale Crest.” He spun tales of aggressive expansion, throwing around buzzwords like synergy and market disruption.

“The past year has been a masterclass in operational recovery,” Ethan boasted to a table of investors, swirling his wine. “We cut the fat. We modernized our logistics. We are lean, mean, and ready for Malibu.”

Arthur sat in silence, letting his son hang himself with every stolen accomplishment.

Vanessa, glowing with smug victory, tapped her glass with a spoon to propose a toast.

“To Ethan,” Vanessa smiled, looking around the table. “The past year proved that this company can adapt and conquer when decisive, visionary leadership finally replaces outdated hesitation.”

It was a blatant, public slap in the face to Arthur. But Arthur just smiled thinly and drank his water.

Evelyn folded her hands in her lap. The fuse had been lit.
