Chapter 9 - The Hotel Receipt

|

Before Evelyn could execute a corporate war, she needed to know exactly how deep the rot in her marriage went. The answer arrived three days later in the form of a misdirected piece of mail.

Ethan’s assistant had accidentally forwarded a batch of corporate expense receipts to the house instead of the accounting department. Evelyn sorted through the envelopes at the kitchen counter.

One receipt caught her eye. An exclusive, ultra-private resort in Malibu.

Three nights. Two guests.

Private in-room dining. Couples massage. A massive charge at the hotel jewelry boutique.

Evelyn checked the dates. Ethan had told her he was attending a one-day regional sales conference in Los Angeles. The conference ended on a Tuesday. The hotel stay stretched until Friday.

She set the paper down on the granite counter. Her heart didn't break; it simply hardened into stone.

That evening, Ethan was in the shower when his phone lit up on the nightstand. Evelyn walked over, the screen glaring in the dimly lit room. It was a text from Vanessa.

When you’re President, she won’t matter anymore. Can’t wait for Saturday. xoxo

Evelyn didn’t unlock the phone. She didn’t take a picture. She just walked back downstairs, poured herself a glass of water, and waited.

When Ethan came down, smelling of expensive body wash and arrogance, Evelyn slid the hotel invoice across the counter.

“Were you with her?” she asked, her voice completely devoid of emotion.

Ethan stopped. He looked at the paper, then at Evelyn. He didn't panic. He didn't beg for forgiveness. Instead, his face twisted into a mask of cruel defense.

“We’ve been distant for a long time, Evelyn,” Ethan said coolly. “Vanessa understands my ambition. You just question everything I do. You’ve become negative. Controlling.”

“I’m controlling?” Evelyn asked softly.

“You got left behind, Evelyn,” Ethan spat, pouring a drink. “You walked away from your career, and now you’re bitter. Don’t blame me just because you need my success to feel important.”

Evelyn looked at the man she had spent nearly a decade loving. She could destroy him right now. But she chose to wait.

“I see,” she said quietly. “Goodnight, Ethan.”
