Chapter 8 - Locked Out

|
By 1:00 AM, the breathtaking Napa estate was shrouded in pitch blackness. The string lights had been shut off, the violinists had left without their final payment, and the remaining floral arrangements sat abandoned on the lawns.
Ivan and Brenda stood near the iron perimeter gates, surrounded by five matching designer suitcases.
Brenda’s parents had left twenty minutes earlier in their private limousine, refusing to let Ivan step inside the vehicle. Arthur Montgomery’s final words to Ivan had been a promise of total legal annihilation if his daughter’s reputation was ruined.
“I can’t believe this is happening!” Brenda sobbed bitterly, shivering in her white silk dress as the cold night air hit her bare shoulders. “Where is the luxury shuttle? Why can’t we get into the bridal suite?”
“The hotel cancelled our reservation, Brenda!” Ivan shouted, his composure completely shattered. He kicked one of the leather suitcases in pure frustration. “The entire system is locked! Every card I own is coming up declined!”
“Then call your mother!” Brenda screamed back at him, her eyes red and swollen. “Call that old woman! You said she had a house in the suburbs! We need somewhere to sleep!”
Ivan pulled out his phone with trembling fingers and dialed my number.
The line rang once. Twice. Three times.
Then, my voice came through the speaker via automated voicemail:
“You have reached Clara Whitmore. If this is Ivan, please remember that I respect your boundaries. Do not call this line again.”
The call disconnected with a harsh tone.
Ivan stared at the glowing phone screen, a sudden, terrifying chill running down his spine.
“I respect your boundaries.”
He remembered her exact words at the gate: “I understand completely.”
For the first time in his life, a wave of sickening realization washed over Ivan. His mother hadn't walked away in defeat. She had walked away in execution.
“She did this...” Ivan whispered, his voice barely audible over the night wind.
Brenda stopped crying and glared at him. “What did you just say? Who did this?”
“My mother,” Ivan gasped, his face turning ghost-white. “She... she knows Samuel Brooks. Samuel Brooks signed those freeze orders.”

Brenda slapped his arm in disbelief. “Are you insane? Your mother is a nobody! She lives in a two-bedroom tract home and wears clothes from discount racks! How could she freeze a half-billion-dollar tech company?”
“I don't know!” Ivan yelled frantically, pulling his collar loose. “I don't know, but we have to go to San Francisco right now!”
