Chapter 14 - The Final Verdict

I walked around the long mahogany table, stopping a few feet away from where my adopted son lay weeping on the floor.
“Mom... please,” Ivan whimpered, looking up at me through bloodshot, desperate eyes. “Give me one more chance. I’ll cancel the marriage with Brenda. I’ll announce to the world that you’re the CEO of Whitmore Global. I’ll put your name on everything!”
I looked down at him, feeling a profound sense of sorrow—not for the arrogant man lying before me, but for the sweet little boy I had carried out of the orphanage twenty-two years ago.
“You still don't understand, do you, Ivan?” I whispered softly. “I never wanted my name on your buildings. I never wanted your public praise. I only wanted your love. I only wanted to sit at my son’s wedding and watch him marry the woman he loved.”
“You can!” Ivan screamed frantically. “We can re-do the wedding! Next week! Anywhere you want!”
“It’s too late, Ivan,” I said, turning my back on him to look out at the skyline. “A mother’s love is limitless, but her willingness to finance her own humiliation is not.”
The heavy oak doors of the boardroom swung open.
Three federal agents in dark blue jackets bearing the letters SEC walked into the room, accompanied by two San Francisco police officers.
Samuel Brooks stepped inside behind them, holding an execution order signed by a federal judge.
“Ivan Whitmore,” the lead SEC agent announced firmly. “You are under arrest for grand corporate fraud, federal patent theft, and filing false financial statements with institutional investors.”
Ivan screamed as the police officers stepped forward, pulling his arms behind his back and snapping cold metal handcuffs around his wrists.

“Mom! Help me!” Ivan shrieked as they hauled him off his knees. “MOM! DON'T DO THIS TO ME! TELL THEM IT WAS A MISTAKE! MOM!”
I didn't turn around. I kept my eyes fixed on the distant ocean as his desperate screams echoed down the long hallway, slowly fading into absolute silence.
