Chapter 5 - A Toast Built on Lies

Ivan stared at his phone screen in disbelief.
“This is impossible,” he muttered under his breath, frantically tapping the screen. He refreshed the app three times, but the red suspension message remained stubbornly unchanged.
“Ivan, darling, everyone is waiting,” Brenda prompted, tapping her microphone with her fingernail. “The photographer needs to capture the primary toast before the lighting shifts.”
Ivan forced a stiff, practiced smile onto his face, slipping his phone back into his tuxedo pocket. He convinced himself it was merely a temporary administrative error by his wealth management firm. His mother's modest trust fund probably had some routine annual maintenance, he reasoned. He would deal with the bank in the morning.
He stood up, holding his crystal glass high. The two hundred guests silenced their conversations, turning their attention toward the head pavilion.
“Friends, family, and distinguished colleagues,” Ivan began, his voice echoing smoothly through the high-end sound system. “Standing here tonight beside my beautiful bride, looking out at the incredible leaders in this room, I am reminded of what it takes to build an empire.”
Brenda’s father, Arthur Montgomery—a prominent venture capitalist known for his ruthless snobbery—nodded approvingly from the front row.
“When I founded Whitmore Dynamics four years ago,” Ivan proclaimed proudly, puffing out his chest, “I had nothing but an idea and relentless grit. I didn't rely on family hand-outs. I didn't come from generational wealth. I built our revolutionary neural code from the ground up, brick by brick, through sheer genius and unwavering determination.”
Scattered applause rippled through the elite crowd. Brenda beamed with pride, resting her chin in her hands as she gazed up at her "self-made" husband.
“I proved that a true visionary creates his own destiny,” Ivan continued dramatically. “I created a company valued at half a billion dollars entirely on my own terms!”
Before the applause could peak, a loud, commotion broke out at the main entrance of the reception pavilion.
Two men in sharp grey business suits, accompanied by three uniformed county sheriffs, pushed past the bewildered event staff.

The lead officer held a thick manila folder in his gloved hand. He scanned the room until his eyes locked onto Ivan standing at the center of the head table.
“Ivan Whitmore?” the officer’s voice boomed over the soft violin music, cutting through the celebration like a jagged knife.
