Chapter 20 - The Unseen Visitor

|
Two years later.
The Pacific ocean breeze blew gently across the cliffs of Big Sur, where my new coastal home overlooked the endless blue horizon. It was a serene, isolated sanctuary—a place where the noise of Silicon Valley and the ghosts of my past could never reach me.
I stood on the wide wooden balcony, wearing a simple white linen dress, holding a cup of hot tea as the golden sun began its slow descent into the water.
Behind me, the glass sliding doors chimed as Samuel Brooks stepped onto the balcony, holding a secure satellite tablet.
“The final paperwork for Ivan’s early parole release has been approved, Clara,” Samuel reported softly, leaning against the wooden railing. “He will be discharged next month. He has requested to live quietly in a small town in Oregon, working as an entry-level code instructor for underprivileged youth.”
I smiled gently, looking out at the waves. “Good. I hope he finds peace there.”
“He asked if he could see you once after his release,” Samuel added hesitantly. “Just for ten minutes. To return something to you.”
“Tell him I will think about it,” I replied quietly.
Samuel nodded, turning to head back inside the house.
Suddenly, my private smartphone—the one number known only to Samuel and my immediate security team—began to ring on the patio table.
I picked up the phone. The caller ID displayed an unknown international number originating from Zurich, Switzerland.
I pressed the receiver to my ear. “Hello?”
A heavy, raspy, ancient voice answered from across the ocean, accompanied by the distinct sound of a respirator machine clicking in the background.
“Hello, Clara,” the voice rasped, cold and terrifyingly familiar.
My breath caught in my throat. My grip tightened around the phone until my knuckles turned white.
“Sterling...?” I whispered, my heart hammering against my ribs.
A dark, wheezing chuckle echoed through the phone speaker.
“I hear you took very good care of my son for twenty-five years, sister-in-law,” Sterling Vance wheezed softly. “And I hear you took everything he built.”
I stood frozen on the balcony as the sun dipped below the ocean horizon, plunging the coastline into deep shadow.
“What do you want, Sterling?” I asked, my voice deadly level.
May you like
“I am dying, Clara,” Sterling rasped, his voice dropping into a chilling, sinister whisper. “And my vast estate requires an heir. Tell me... is my boy ready to learn who his real father is?”
I looked out into the gathering darkness as the phone line hummed with a dangerous, unspoken threat, leaving the future hanging on the edge of a blade.
