Chapter 13 - The Anatomy of Sacrifice

|

“No, Mom! You didn't fail!” Ivan pleaded desperately, crawling a few inches closer on his knees. “I’m sorry! I was wrong! Yesterday... yesterday at the wedding, I was just stressed out! Brenda and her family were putting so much pressure on me to make everything look perfect!”

“Don't blame Brenda for your own moral corruption, Ivan,” I interrupted, my voice dropping an octave. “Brenda didn't force you to sneer at me. Brenda didn't force you to tell me that a real mother would respect your boundaries. Those were your words. From your heart.”

Ivan choked on his sob, bowing his head toward the floor. “I love you, Mom... please... don't destroy my company. I built Whitmore Dynamics! It’s my life’s work!”

I let out a soft, bitter laugh.

“You didn't build Whitmore Dynamics, Ivan,” I stated, pulling a thick leather binder from my desk and opening it. “You merely managed a shadow projection of my wealth.”

I began reading from the documents inside:

“When you needed your initial seed capital of two million dollars, who do you think directed the Apex Angel Fund to write that check? I did.”

Ivan looked up, his mouth agape.

“When you were on the verge of bankruptcy in 2024,” I continued, “who do you think instructed Whitmore Global to quietly purchase forty percent of your non-voting shares for fifty million dollars to keep your doors open? I did.”

I turned another page.

“And when your engineering team failed to develop a functional algorithm, you stole the proprietary code from Aegis Tech—a subsidiary that I own. You didn't build an empire, Ivan. You built a house of cards inside my hurricane.”

Ivan collapsed completely onto his side, clutching his stomach as if physically sick.

“I gave you twenty-five years of unconditional love, Ivan,” I said quietly, standing up from my chair. “I pawned my family’s history so a surgeon could fix your heart when you were three. I wore shoes with holes in the soles so you could wear designer clothes to private school. And yesterday, you decided I didn't fit your aesthetic.”
