Chapter 9 - The Warning

|

Back at the penthouse, Gabriel was standing by the massive glass windows, staring down at the city below. He held a phone to his ear, listening intently to the voice on the other end.

"The package was delivered, Boss," Elias reported over the secure line. "Old man Caldwell looked like he was going to have a heart attack."

"Good," Gabriel said, a dark smirk playing on his lips. "Let them sweat. Keep the surveillance teams on the estate. If Ryan tries to run, take him."

He hung up the phone and turned around. Lily was standing in the doorway of the kitchen, watching him. She had showered and changed into a pair of soft gray leggings and an oversized sweater she had found in the guest closet. She looked incredibly small, but the haunted look in her eyes from last night was slowly being replaced by a fierce, quiet resilience.

"You sent them a message," Lily stated.

Gabriel nodded, walking toward her. "I sent them your earring. The one he tore off."

Lily reached up, instinctively touching her bare earlobe. "They know it's you."

"I want them to know it's me," Gabriel said, stopping a few feet away from her. "I want Ryan Caldwell to look over his shoulder every second of every day. I want him to feel exactly how you felt in that room when he locked the door."

Lily looked down at her hands. "His father is powerful, Gabriel. They have politicians in their pockets. They have money."

"Money cannot stop a bullet," Gabriel replied coldly. "And politicians scatter like roaches when the lights come on. The Caldwells built their empire on intimidation and legitimate legal threats. They have never faced a war they couldn't buy their way out of. Until today."

He reached out, his long fingers gently lifting her chin so she was forced to look into his dark, bottomless eyes.

"You are safe here, Lily," Gabriel murmured, his thumb lightly brushing the unbruised side of her neck. "No one will ever hurt you again. I give you my word."

The promise hung in the air, heavy and absolute. Lily stared at the mafia boss, realizing with a sudden, terrifying clarity that she trusted this dangerous criminal more than she had ever trusted anyone in her entire life.

"What happens next?" she whispered.

"Next," Gabriel said, dropping his hand, "we systematically dismantle his entire life."
