Chapter 14 - The Delivery

|

The abandoned rail yard on the South Side of Chicago was a desolate, terrifying place. Rusted train cars sat on overgrown tracks like decaying metal skeletons. The only light came from the harsh, blinding headlights of three black SUVs parked in a semi-circle.

Gabriel stood in the center of the lights, wearing a long black overcoat that whipped around his legs in the freezing wind.

Lily stood exactly one step behind him. She was wearing a thick black coat Gabriel had given her, her hands buried deep in the pockets. Her heart was beating so fast she thought she might pass out, but she stood tall, refusing to show weakness.

A black tactical van pulled into the yard, its heavy tires crunching over the gravel. It stopped a few feet away from Gabriel.

The rear doors swung open. Two massive Syndicate enforcers stepped out, dragging a limp, battered figure between them. They threw Ryan Caldwell onto the gravel at Gabriel’s feet.

Ryan groaned, coughing up blood from a cut on his lip. His designer clothes were ruined, his hands zip-tied tightly behind his back. He struggled to his knees, blinking against the harsh headlights.

He looked up, expecting to see his father. Instead, he saw the towering, terrifying figure of Gabriel Thorne.

"Mr. Thorne," Ryan stammered, blood dripping from his chin. "Please. My father will pay you. Whatever you want. Fifty million. A hundred million! Just let me go."

Gabriel didn't say a word. He didn't even look at Ryan. He simply took a slow, deliberate step to the side.

The headlights illuminated the person standing behind him.

Ryan squinted against the glare, trying to focus on the small figure stepping out of Gabriel's shadow.

When his eyes finally adjusted, the blood drained completely from his face, leaving him looking like a ghost in the freezing night.

It was the maid. The girl from Suite 1407.

"No," Ryan whispered, shaking his head in absolute, horrified disbelief. "No, that's impossible."

Lily looked down at the billionaire heir kneeling in the dirt. He wasn't powerful anymore. He was pathetic, broken, and terrified.

"Hello, Ryan," Lily said, her voice surprisingly steady, echoing across the empty rail yard.
