Chapter 1 - The Dark Closet

|

The storage room on the fourteenth floor smelled of industrial bleach and stale dust. Lily Dawson sat on the cold concrete floor, her knees pulled tight against her chest. Her uniform, usually crisp and impeccably clean, was torn at the shoulder. Blood had dried into a stiff, dark crust along her collarline, a physical reminder of the last twenty minutes of her life.

She stared at the man standing in the doorway.

He was framed by the dim light of the hallway, a massive silhouette in a tailored black suit. He didn't look like hotel security. He didn't look like a guest who had simply gotten lost looking for the restroom. He looked like a man who owned the building, the shadows, and everything in between.

"Who are you?" she whispered, her voice trembling despite her best efforts to keep it steady.

"Someone who was in the wrong corridor at the wrong time," he said, his voice a low, smooth baritone that sent a strange shiver down her spine. "Or the right corridor, depending on how this conversation goes."

He stepped fully into the small storage closet and pulled the heavy wooden door shut behind him. The click of the latch echoed like a gunshot. The only light now came from a single, flickering fluorescent bulb overhead.

Lily pushed herself further back, her shoulder blades scraping against the metal shelving unit.

"Don't come any closer," she said.

"I'm not moving," he replied quietly.

He stayed exactly where he was, giving her space. His dark eyes scanned her face, dropping to the torn fabric of her uniform, the bruised skin of her neck, and the blood on her collar. When his gaze lifted back to her eyes, the air in the room seemed to drop ten degrees. The easy, casual posture he had held a moment ago vanished, replaced by a terrifying, absolute stillness.

"What is your name?" he asked.

"Lily," she breathed out, not knowing why she answered him.

"Lily." He tested the name, his jaw tightening. "Who was in Suite 1407 with you, Lily?"

She squeezed her eyes shut. The memory of Ryan Caldwell's laughing face, the smell of expensive bourbon, the sudden, violent grip of his hands on her uniform—it all rushed back, suffocating her.

"You don't want to get involved," she whispered. "He's... he's powerful."

The man let out a soft, dark sound that might have been a laugh if it held any humor.

"I assure you, Lily," he said, taking off his suit jacket. "Whatever power he thinks he has, it ends tonight."
