Chapter 17 - The Empire Crumbles

|
The following morning, the city of Chicago woke up to an absolute financial earthquake.
The news cycle was dominated by the catastrophic fall of the Caldwell Group. Federal agents had raided the corporate headquarters before dawn, hauling out boxes of hard drives and ledgers. Richard Caldwell was perp-walked out of his estate in handcuffs, his arrogant face plastered across every major news network.
And Ryan Caldwell, the golden boy of private equity, was currently sitting in federal custody, facing over forty counts of fraud, embezzlement, and racketeering.
The disappearances of the PR team, the lawyers, and the fixers were finally explained. Gabriel hadn't just tortured them; his men had extracted every single password, every hidden account, and every dirty secret the Caldwell family had buried for thirty years, packaging it neatly for the Department of Justice.
Lily sat on the velvet sofa in Gabriel's penthouse, watching the news coverage on the massive screen.
She held a cup of warm tea, her eyes fixed on the footage of the Caldwell estate being cordoned off with yellow police tape.
Gabriel walked into the living room, wearing a fitted black button-down shirt with the sleeves rolled up, exposing the dark, intricate tattoos on his forearms. He sat down next to her, leaving a respectful distance, but close enough that she could feel the heat radiating from his large frame.
"It's everywhere," Lily murmured, gesturing to the TV.
"It will be for weeks," Gabriel agreed, resting his arm along the back of the sofa. "The Caldwell empire is officially dead. They will never recover from this. The IRS alone will bleed them dry for the next twenty years."
Lily looked away from the screen, turning her gaze to the man sitting beside her. The ruthless, terrifying mafia boss who had burned down a billionaire's life simply because she asked him to.
"Why did you really do it, Gabriel?" Lily asked softly, searching his dark eyes. "You said you prey on monsters. But you risked your own Syndicate to expose them. You put yourself in danger for a maid you didn't even know."

Gabriel’s expression softened. He reached out, his thumb gently grazing the fading bruise on her collarbone.
"I told you I was in the right corridor at the right time," Gabriel whispered, his voice dropping to a gravelly, intimate register. "I didn't know you, Lily. But when I saw you sitting on that floor, broken but refusing to scream... I recognized a survivor. And I realized I didn't want to just save you. I wanted to keep you."
