Chapter 15 - Face to Face

Ryan stared at Lily, his mind struggling to comprehend the reality of the situation. The invisible, plus-size catering maid he had assaulted and discarded was standing next to the most dangerous mafia boss in the Midwest, looking down at him like a queen surveying a ruined kingdom.
"You?" Ryan gasped, his voice cracking with panic. "All of this... my friends, my security, the hit on my family... because of you?"
"You locked the door, Ryan," Lily said coldly, taking a slow step closer. The fear that had paralyzed her in the closet was completely gone, replaced by a cold, empowering fury. "You thought I was a nobody. You thought you could tear me apart and no one would care."
"I was drunk!" Ryan cried desperately, looking frantically from Lily to Gabriel. "It was a mistake! I'll pay you! I'll give you millions! You can never work another day in your life!"
Gabriel let out a dark, mocking laugh. He stepped up beside Lily, resting a protective, heavy hand on her shoulder.
"He still thinks he can buy his way out," Gabriel murmured to Lily, loud enough for Ryan to hear. "He truly doesn't understand."
Gabriel looked down at the kneeling billionaire.
"You aren't negotiating with me, Ryan," Gabriel said, his voice dropping to a lethal, vibrating tone. "You are negotiating with her. I am simply the executioner waiting for her command."
Ryan looked at Lily, tears of sheer terror spilling down his face. The arrogant heir was fully broken. He threw himself forward, pressing his forehead into the filthy gravel at Lily's boots.
"Please," Ryan sobbed, begging for his life to the woman he had tried to destroy. "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. Please don't let him kill me."
Lily stared down at the groveling man. She remembered the sheer terror of his hands on her throat, the way he had laughed at her tears. She held his life entirely in her hands. A single word from her, and Gabriel's men would put a bullet in his brain and bury him under the tracks.
The power was intoxicating. But looking at the pathetic, crying mess of a man on the ground, Lily realized something profound.

Killing him was too easy. It would end his suffering instantly.
"I don't want him dead," Lily said softly, looking up at Gabriel.
