Victor narrowed his eyes.
“The empire will survive.”
“My name still means something.”
My mother shook her head slowly.
“There is no empire, Victor.”
“Mara gave it all back.”
“Every single dollar.”
Victor stopped breathing for a second.
The subtle twitch of his eye betrayed his absolute panic.
“She couldn’t.”
“She did.”
A pause.
“Your legacy is gone.”
“Your money is gone.”
“And tomorrow, Hawthorne Manor is being demolished.”
Victor dropped the phone.
He pressed his trembling hands against the glass.
For the first time in his life, he had nothing left to control.
