Two weeks later, the lawyer called.
Not the corrupt ones from the past.
A new one.
He asked me to come to the bank.
There was one last safety deposit box.
Daniel’s name was on it.
When they opened it, I expected documents.
Stock certificates.
Deeds to hidden properties.
Instead, there was only a thick, black leather notebook.
I opened it carefully.
Pages of handwritten notes.
Names.
Dates.
Amounts.
I looked at the lawyer.
“What is this?”
He adjusted his glasses.
“It’s a ledger, Mara.”
A pause.
“It is a list of every family Victor and Julian destroyed to build the Vale empire.”
My blood ran cold.
