My mother went to the prison the next day.
She didn’t ask me to come.
She needed to do it alone.
She sat in the visitor’s booth.
The heavy reinforced glass separated them.
Victor was brought in.
He wore an orange jumpsuit.
His silver hair was uncombed.
He looked old.
He picked up the phone.
He expected her to gloat.
He expected anger.
Sofia just looked at him with absolute, quiet indifference.
