Julian wasn’t dead.
He was waiting.
Watching while his brother took the fall.
Watching while I dismantled the family empire.
And now he wanted it back.
The next day, an invitation arrived.
The Apex Charity Gala.
The most exclusive event in the city.
Held at the top of the Zenith Skyscraper.
The foundation was the guest of honor.
Or rather...
The target.
“We don’t go,” Caleb said.
“We have to,” I replied.
“It’s a trap, Mara.”
“I know.”
I looked at the invitation.
“But if we hide, he wins.”
“Julian is a ghost. We don’t know what he’s capable of.”
My mother shook her head.
“He’s worse than Victor.”
A pause.
“Victor wanted control.”
“Julian wants destruction.”
I looked at my phone.
A text message lit up the screen.

From an unknown number.
“Bring the child. Or I’ll come get her.”
