Chapter 7 - The Second Account

|
The silence that followed was suffocating.
Even the falling snow seemed to quiet down. The two police officers stared at Victoria in absolute disgust. Victoria tried to maintain her aristocratic posture, but her hands were shaking as she clutched her fur coat around herself.
“That is child endangerment, grand larceny, and witness intimidation,” the senior officer stated plainly. He pulled a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt. “Daniel Carter, turn around and place your hands behind your back.”
Daniel gasped, backing away.
“Wait! Arresting me? For what? It’s my son’s account! I’m the primary trustee!”
“You drained two hundred thousand dollars from a minor’s trust fund for personal use and locked him outside in freezing weather to cover it up,” the officer said coldly, grabbing Daniel’s arm and forcing it behind his back. “You have the right to remain silent...”
“Dad! Help me!” Daniel panicked, looking at me as the cold steel clicked around his wrists. “Dad, please! Tell them not to do this! I was going to put the money back! I swear I was going to replace it!”
I stood frozen, staring at the boy I had raised, educated, and loved for thirty-five years.
“With what money, Daniel?” I asked quietly. “You bought this mansion. You bought her that luxury SUV. You paid for ski trips to Aspen and diamond necklaces while your son didn't even have proper winter boots. You bled your dead wife’s legacy dry.”
Daniel began to weep as the officer pushed him toward the back of the police cruiser.
“Dad... there’s something else,” Daniel choked out, stopping near the cruiser door.
Victoria’s eyes went wide with pure panic.
“Daniel! Shut up! Don't you dare!” she shrieked.
Daniel ignored her, looking at me with eyes full of utter defeat and shame.
“The trust account wasn't the only one, Dad,” Daniel confessed, his voice barely audible over the cold wind.
I stopped breathing.
“What do you mean?”
Daniel swallowed hard, tears pouring down his cheeks.
“Before Rachel died... she set up a second account. A separate private investment fund.”
“Where?” I demanded, stepping closer to the cruiser.
“It was registered directly under your name, Dad,” Daniel whispered. “Rachel left it to you to manage for Ethan’s medical care and future... She knew I was terrible with money.”
I felt the world tilt beneath my feet.
“I never received any paperwork for another account, Daniel,” I said, my voice trembling. “Where is that money?”

Daniel lowered his head, unable to look me in the eye.
“It’s gone,” Daniel whispered. “All of it.”
