Chapter 12 - A Threat in the Hallway

I rushed back to the hospital, terrified that Victoria might try to come near Ethan.
When I arrived at the pediatric floor, I found two uniformed police officers posted outside Ethan’s room—a precaution Marcus had arranged.
As I walked down the hallway, I saw a woman standing near the elevators wearing a dark trench coat and large sunglasses. She turned around as I approached.
It was Victoria.
Her expensive hair was messy, and her face was pale, but her eyes were filled with pure, unadulterated venom.
“Arthur,” she hissed, stepping toward me.
I immediately put my arm out, blocking her path.
“You’re breaking your bail conditions just by being in this hospital, Victoria,” I warned coldly. “Get out before I have those officers put you back in a cell.”
Victoria took off her sunglasses, leaning in close so the officers wouldn't hear her.
“Listen to me, you miserable old man,” she whispered, her voice trembling with hatred. “You think you’ve won? Daniel is taking the fall for everything. His name is on all the withdrawal slips. His signature is on the trust documents. My lawyer will prove I had no idea where that money came from!”
I stared at her, marveling at her incredible capacity for evil.
“You locked a child out in the snow, Victoria. The police officers saw it. My truck tires were still warm when I picked him up. You’re going to prison.”
Victoria’s lip curled into a sneer.
“We’ll see about that in court,” she spat. “And as for Ethan... he’ll be placed in state foster care before I ever let you take him permanently.”

She turned on her heel and strutted toward the elevator doors.
I watched her go, my heart pounding, but I knew she was wrong about one thing. She had underestimated how far a grandfather would go to protect his family.
