Chapter 16 - The Verdict

|

The evidence was damning and absolute.

The judge slammed her gavel down with a sharp, resounding crack that echoed through the packed courtroom.

“This court finds overwhelmingly that the defendants operated in conspiracy to abuse a minor, commit grand larceny, and obstruct justice,” the judge declared, her eyes flashing with anger as she glared at Victoria and Daniel.

“Victoria Hart-Carter, your bail is revoked immediately. You will be remanded to the custody of the state pending trial.”

Victoria burst into hysterical tears as two court officers grabbed her arms, pulling her away from the defense table.

“No! You can’t do this to me!” she shrieked, kicking her legs as she was dragged toward the side holding cell. “Daniel! Tell them! Tell them it was all you!”

Daniel didn't even look at her. He kept his eyes glued to the floorboards, tears dripping off his nose onto his orange jumpsuit.

The judge turned her attention to my son.

“Daniel Carter, you betrayed your dead wife’s trust, stole your child’s future, and allowed him to suffer in freezing temperatures. Your sentencing hearing will take place next month.”

Daniel slowly lifted his head and looked at me across the wooden railing.

“Dad...” he rasped, his voice filled with unbearable shame. “I’m sorry...”

I looked at my son—the boy I had raised, who had traded his soul for greed and vanity.

“I know you are, Daniel,” I said softly, my voice devoid of anger, left only with a deep, permanent sorrow. “But sorry doesn't warm a freezing child in the snow.”

I turned my back on him and walked out of the courtroom.
