Chapter 15 - The Deposition

|

Two weeks later, the preliminary hearing was held at the Manhattan Supreme Courthouse.

The courtroom was packed with reporters, police officers, and legal representatives. Victoria sat at the defense table, wearing a dark navy suit, looking smug and confident beside her high-priced criminal defense team.

Daniel sat two seats away from her, wearing an orange orange prison jumpsuit, his hands cuffed at his waist. He looked gaunt, hollow, and completely broken.

The prosecutor stood up and presented the evidence—the bank statements, the hospital records of Ethan’s frostbite, and the police testimony from New Year’s Eve.

Then, Victoria’s lead attorney stood up, resting his hands on the podium.

“Your Honor,” the attorney argued smoothly. “My client, Victoria Hart-Carter, had no knowledge of her husband’s illegal financial activities. She was simply a victim of his deception. As for the incident on New Year’s Eve, it was a harmless disciplinary measure gone wrong. She did not know the child was barefoot.”

I stood up from the gallery bench.

Marcus Vance stepped forward, holding the black USB drive from Rachel’s safe.

“Your Honor,” Marcus announced loudly. “We request permission to submit new, conclusive evidence into the record.”

Victoria’s attorney objected immediately, but the judge overruled him.

“Go ahead, Mr. Vance,” the judge ordered.

Marcus played the audio files recovered from the USB drive and the newly discovered emails between Victoria and Daniel.

In an email dated three months prior, Victoria had written to Daniel:

“If your brat keeps threatening to go to your father about the trust fund, lock him out of the house until he learns to keep his mouth shut. I won't let a twelve-year-old ruin my life.”

The entire courtroom gasped.

Victoria’s smug expression shattered into pure horror. She whipped her head around to stare at her lawyer, but he looked away, shaking his head.
