Chapter 19 - The Safe Haven

|

By the summer of that year, my home felt alive again.

Ethan’s laugh echoed through the halls that had been quiet for so many years since my wife passed away. We spent our weekends fishing at the lake, building model airplanes in the garage, and cooking dinners together in the kitchen.

One evening, as the sun was setting over the trees, casting a warm golden glow across the backyard, Ethan and I sat on the porch swings, sipping ice tea.

Ethan looked down at his feet. He was wearing brand-new leather sneakers. He wiggled his toes inside them, smiling softly.

“Grandpa?”

“Yeah, Ethan?”

“Do you remember New Year’s Eve?”

I paused, looking at him carefully.

“I do.”

“I used to think that night was the worst night of my life,” Ethan said quietly, looking out over the yard. “Sitting out there in the cold, thinking nobody was coming for me.”

He turned to look at me, his eyes bright and clear.

“But now I know it was the night my life actually started.”

I pulled him into a side hug, kissing the top of his head.

“You’re safe now, kiddo. Always.”

We sat together in peaceful silence as the stars began to twinkle in the summer sky. Everything seemed perfect. The storm had passed, the villains were brought to justice, and my grandson was whole again.

Or so I thought.
