Chapter 14 - The Hidden Recordings

Inside the safe lay three thick leather journals, a manila envelope, and a small black USB flash drive labeled with a silver marker: FOR ARTHUR.
My hands shook as I pulled the USB drive from the safe.
I plugged it into Daniel’s desktop computer on the desk and clicked on the single video file stored inside.
The screen flickered to life.
Rachel’s pale, gentle face appeared on the monitor. She looked frail, sitting in her hospice bed six years ago, but her eyes were sharp and filled with determination.
“Arthur,” Rachel’s recorded voice spoke through the computer speakers. “If you are watching this video, it means I am gone, and Daniel has done something unforgivable.”
Tears instantly welled up in my eyes at the sound of her voice.
“I loved your son with all my heart,” Rachel continued in the recording. “But over the last year of my illness, I began to see a darkness in him. He started gambling again. He met people he shouldn't have met. I realized he could not be trusted with Ethan’s future.”
She reached off-camera and picked up a stack of legal documents.
“In this safe, you will find the original signed trust agreement,” Rachel explained. “I secretly filed a master clause with my estate attorney, Marcus Vance. That clause states that if Daniel ever attempts to withdraw more than ten thousand dollars without your written, notarized approval, control of both accounts immediately transfers entirely to you, Arthur.”
I gasped aloud in the quiet office.
Rachel had foreseen everything. She had built a trap for Daniel six years before he even met Victoria.
“Furthermore,” Rachel added, her voice turning cold, “I recorded every financial transaction Daniel made during my final months. The proof of his original embezzlements is on this drive. Use it to protect my boy, Arthur. Promise me you’ll protect Ethan.”
The video ended, fading to a black screen.

I sat back in the leather chair, wiping my eyes.
“I promise, Rachel,” I whispered to the empty room. “I promise.”
